The Hidden Cost of Dust
An air purifier is a vacuum cleaner for the air. Just like a Dyson loses suction when the bin is full, an air purifier loses airflow when the pre-filter is clogged. Running a clogged machine wastes electricity and puts strain on the fan motor, potentially shortening its lifespan.
Step 1: The Pre-Filter (Every 2 Weeks)
Most modern units (like the Levoit or Winix models) have a mesh or fabric "pre-filter". This catches the big stuff—hair, lint, and large dust bunnies. **Do This:** 1. Turn off and unplug the unit. 2. Open the back panel. 3. Vacuum the mesh pre-filter gently with a brush attachment. 4. If it is washable (check manual!), run it under cold water and let it dry completely (24hrs) before putting it back. **Never put a wet filter back in the machine.** It will grow mould.
Step 2: The HEPA Filter (Do Not Wash!)
The white, pleated paper filter is the HEPA. **Do not wash this.** Water will ruin the delicate fibers instantly. Some brands say you can vacuum it gently to extend its life, but once it turns grey/black, it is done. You must replace it. Using an expired HEPA filter is like drinking water through a dirty sponge—at best it slows flow, at worst it releases pollutants back into the air.
