The Short Answer: No — But It's Complicated

A single air purifier cannot effectively clean the air in multiple rooms simultaneously. Air purifiers work by drawing room air through filters and returning clean air to the same space. For clean air to move from one room to another, it must travel through walls, around corners, and through doorways — all of which dramatically reduce airflow. In practice, an air purifier in the hallway of a typical UK semi-detached house will have negligible impact on air quality in the bedrooms upstairs. The physics simply do not support it. However, there are scenarios where a single unit can cover more than one space: in genuinely open-plan layouts (e.g. a large open kitchen/lounge/diner with no dividing walls), a very high-CADR unit positioned centrally can clean a combined 60-80 m² effectively. In a studio flat with no internal walls at all, a single unit is perfectly adequate. For a typical three-bedroom UK house, the realistic requirement is two to three units: one in the main living space and one in each bedroom where people sleep.

Levoit Core 600S Smart Air Purifier

If you want a single unit to cover a large open-plan floor, the Levoit Core 600S with 697 m³/h CADR is the strongest option. It can genuinely handle a 60 m² open-plan space run on high, maintaining adequate air changes per hour without needing multiple units.

The Smart Approach: Budget Allocation

Rather than spending £400-500 on one "whole house" unit that cannot actually clean the whole house, consider spending the same budget on two or three good mid-range units placed in the rooms where you spend the most time. Two Levoit Core 300S units (£149 each, so £298 total) will clean two bedrooms more effectively than a single £400 premium unit placed in the hallway between them. Prioritise in this order: bedroom (where you spend 7-8 hours), main lounge or living space, children's rooms and nurseries, and finally secondary spaces like home offices and playrooms.

Whole-House Coverage FAQs

Can I move one air purifier between rooms?expand_more
Yes, and many people do this effectively. Move it to the bedroom 1-2 hours before bedtime to ensure it has cleaned the air before you sleep, then move it to the living area during the day.
Is one large purifier better than two small ones?expand_more
For different rooms, two smaller units outperform one large unit. Air does not effectively move between rooms. Prioritise having a unit in each space where you spend significant time.
Do ducted HVAC systems with HEPA filters clean the whole house?expand_more
Yes, if the system is designed for it and uses a proper HEPA filter. However, most UK homes do not have central forced-air HVAC. If yours does, upgrading the filter to HEPA-grade is very effective.

Summary

One unit cannot clean your whole home. Invest in one unit per room where you spend significant time. Budget-wise, two mid-range units for two bedrooms will outperform a single expensive unit placed centrally.
